Ms. Danhi and her students' parents use this page to help each other make the most of their 2012/13 Kindergarten class at Sagamore Hills Elementary School.
Email parents and Ms. Danhi using the class email list.
Please use the "Edit" tab at the top and the "[edit]" links to the right of each section heading. Every little bit helps!
Volunteer

AR Testing
2 hours, 8:30-10:30, Any Day
Sign Up
At a computer in the classroom or library, help each student take a five multiple choice question test, to confirm they've read (or been read) an Accellerated Reader (AR) book.
Math Club
1 hour, Any Time, Any Day
Sign Up
Assist students with fun math exercises appropriate for various levels. Volunteers may get math exercises from:
- Ms. Danhi
- Ms. Miller (Discovery teacher)
- Themselves with Ms. Danhi's assistance
Computer Club
1 hour, Any Time, Any Day
Sign Up
Assist students with fun computing exercises. Class will be divided into two groups of about 10, based on computing proficiency, to use the computer lab for about 30 minutes.
The goal is to increase computing exposure/experience/literacy. Computing exercises are up for development by the volunteer and Ms Danhi. Some ideas:
- Type… anything!
- General introduction: terms, techniques (mousing, clicking, dragging, enter/delete/esc, shift/capslock)
- Add more here…

This section needs work…
Suggested times: Kids Cooking rotates with Mad Scientist every other week. Fridays 1-2 pm 1-2 parents needed. Science supplies available in Sagamore Science Lab - get assistance from Ms. Danhi or Ms. Lambert. Parents can come up with science experiments or ask teachers for help with ideas.
Students get to cook up and enjoy a treat on Fridays (time specified below). Week's end fun while learning nutrition, math (addition, fractions), cooperation, and whatever else we throw in. Volunteers needed to contribute:
- Recipe ideas and their value
- Ingredients
- Time helping students "cook"
From Audrey, 2012-10-09:
We could rotate this with the cooking and do one every other week. Parents would volunteer to do a science experiment or instruction (age appropriate of course) for the class. I learned that we are able to use the materials from the science lab for class projects and things like this. We just need to let Ms. Danhi or Ms. Lambert know and we can get the supplies. I am going to volunteer to help organize the lab. It has a ton of stuff there to have some fun with!
Another take:
Vol to develop a science experiment with the kids. Materials can be obtained in the school science lab with coordination with teacher and/or Ms. Lambert. Experiment should be approved by teacher in advance.
Thursday Folders

Stuff student folders with provided communications from around the school.
At home
In addition to class assigned homework, consider the following at home activities.
See also: kindergarten resources.
Accelerated Reader (AR)
Accelerated Reader (AR) books can be read any time (by students or by parents to students).
AR tests can be taken at any school computer, such as before or after school in the library or classroom. From a school computer:
- "Renesiance Learning" from the desktop
- "Accelerated Reader" or "Reading Test" [Fixme: I forget]
- "Student ID" is their 7-digit DeKalb Country student ID (used for lunch)
- "Password" is the student's birthday as MMYY (December 30, 2006 = 1206)
This activity is in addition to participation facilitated by volunteer AR testing in the classroom.
Reflections
In Class
Growing Caterpillar Reading Tracker
A caterpillar on the wall of the classroom will grow throughout year as students read (or are read) books. Any book read by or to a student can count (Accelerated Reader (AR), at home favorites, those read in class, etc.).
Students, parents, and/or Ms. Danhi, write on one paper circle caterpillar segment [where do we get them?] for each book read:
- Title
- Author
- Rating by Student [format (up/down, 1-5, their own words, etc.)?]
If a paper circle caterpillar segment isn't available, a read book's information should be added to the student's Reading Record [or Reading Log?] [Should it stay in thier folder?] [Did October's have pumpkins to color?], to be later copied to a paper circle caterpillar segment.
Finally, paper circle caterpillar segments, each with information on a book read by or to a student, are placed on the wall to make the caterpillar grow. Exciting!

Ideas
Thinking out loud about other ways to help our class.
Writing
Mentioned by Ms. Weirick's class:
3- Kid Writing Volunteers: Around 9am every day, the kids will be practicing their writing. A big help to Ms. Weirick would be for an adult to come by around 9am to help with this. The kids will have drawn a picture. The adult then encourages the child to write a sentence that explains the drawing. Of course, the adult may end up writing some words or all of the sentence, but it's great writing practice for the kids.

Classroom Assistant
Be a "second teacher" and help students during class.
Mystery Reader
Surprise the class and read the kids a story! If you don't want to bring your own book(s), Ms. Danhi can provide.
Homework Packets
Each Monday, a packet with the week's homework is sent home, to be returned finished by the student on Friday. Assist Ms. Danhi by making copies.
