Activities
Growing Caterpillar Reading Tracker
A caterpillar on the wall of the classroom will grow throughout year as students read (or are read) books. Any book read by or to a student can count (Accelerated Reader (AR), at home favorites, those read in class, etc.).
Students, parents, and/or Ms. Danhi, write on one paper circle caterpillar segment [where do we get them?] for each book read:
- Title
- Author
- Rating by Student [format (up/down, 1-5, their own words, etc.)?]
If a paper circle caterpillar segment isn't available, a read book's information should be added to the student's Reading Record [or Reading Log?] [Should it stay in thier folder?] [Did October's have pumpkins to color?], to be later copied to a paper circle caterpillar segment.
Finally, paper circle caterpillar segments, each with information on a book read by or to a student, are placed on the wall to make the caterpillar grow. Exciting!

Reflections
Ideas
Thinking out loud about other ways to help our class.
Writing
Mentioned by Ms. Weirick's class:
3- Kid Writing Volunteers: Around 9am every day, the kids will be practicing their writing. A big help to Ms. Weirick would be for an adult to come by around 9am to help with this. The kids will have drawn a picture. The adult then encourages the child to write a sentence that explains the drawing. Of course, the adult may end up writing some words or all of the sentence, but it's great writing practice for the kids.

Science
From Audrey, 2012-10-09:
We could rotate this with the cooking and do one every other week. Parents would volunteer to do a science experiment or instruction (age appropriate of course) for the class. I learned that we are able to use the materials from the science lab for class projects and things like this. We just need to let Ms. Danhi or Ms. Lambert know and we can get the supplies. I am going to volunteer to help organize the lab. It has a ton of stuff there to have some fun with!
Math
From Audrey, 2012-10-09:
Parent volunteers to come in and help kids in math. Would have to talk with Ms. Danhi about how we could do this best. Ms. Miller (Discovery teacher) may have some ideas to help with this too. I spoke with her earlier on and she was really creative with education. I would like to see the class doing more with math and science for sure!
Computer
From Audrey, 2012-10-09:
You [Michelle] had expressed some interest in seeing how we could use the computer lab more. Maybe we can come up with some time to teach the kids how to use it like to type a letter to someone or write a poem or short story? I don't know anything about Macs, but Dave may have some ideas. It would be small groups and for short times. Parents could volunteer twice a month or something?
